Betrayal ~ M.L. Guida

Betrayal by M.L. Guida
3.5 stars

This one was a new twist on the world of Angels. Check out the Blurb.

BLURB:
Scythe must save his brother's soul before the next full moon, Heather is determined to prove her sister's innocence, but to do this, they must trust each other. Heather Bowen, a drug and alcohol counselor, has always been able to see auras, but now she's being haunted in her sleep by a red-eyed man who's peddling a psychotic drug to her clients. After her sister becomes his next victim, Heather is determined to prove her sister's innocence. Life as she knows it becomes more unpredictable when the new counselor, Scythe Angel, arrives. It doesn't take Heather more than a first meeting to determine this larger than life man is commanding, pushy, determined and downright sexy. However there's something about him she's not sure she can trust, no matter how she finds herself drawn to him. Scythe knows he can clear Heather's sister's name, but to do it he must confront his elusive and dangerous brother who seems to be bound to the dark side. With his own wings on the line, Scythe has to discover a way to save his brother's soul before it's too late. An arduous task for Scythe becomes even more complicated by his unearthly attraction to Heather. For both of them to succeed they will have to learn to trust each other or fail; losing everything they hold dear.

My Take: Heather is an Aura reading substance abuse counselor. My guess is you don't wanna try to hide things from the counselor who can see beneath the surface. As far as her character goes I found her kind of up and down. Mostly she's strong willed and detemined but she does let some strange man order her around which I found to be a little odd.
Scythe is an interesting character. The Angel who helps guide your soul to Heaven, Hell or purgatory. He feels conflicted because of his uncontrollable draw to Heather and his duty to save his brother. Personally I feel like his brother is past redemption seeing as he has killed innocent people and ruined the lives of their families. But I guess if he was my brother maybe I'd be unable to give up to.
Overall it was an interesting story. If your in to bad ass Angels this one is for you.

Carnevale ~ Rivka Spicer

4.5 stars

Well here it is! I was so excited to get get this book that I pretty much shelved everything else so I could read it! Let me tell you it was fabulous. Spicer pics the story up about a year after

Masquerade

Summary: Hurt and betrayed by the man she loved, Oceana has left the vampires behind and returned to her old life.

A year on, and still unable to forgive Tristan for his misdeeds, she is in no mood to help out when his family arrive on her doorstep begging for her help. But when the price for making a stand is the death of a man she holds dear, she is once again sucked unwillingly into the politics of vampire kind.

With the French threatening to annexe Britain and her powers spiralling wildly out of control, Oceana knows she has to risk it all. There is no room for error in the sprawling political mess and the smallest mistake will cost her her life.

My Take:

Wow what can I say. I love Oceana, she is a powerful character. Sadly I read a fair amount of books with weeping violets instead of strong backboned main characters. Oceana isn't a woman hoping for a man to save her. She is someone hell bent on doing what is right and just. Even when that means putting her own personal comfort and wishes to the side.

This new chapter in her story shows us just how powerful she has become and hints towards even more power in the future. I did find it saddening to realize Tristans intentions for his death and Oceana's pregnancy may not have been as noble as we thought. In truth that seems more in character but it dosen't help the hurt Oceana feels when she finds out a year later that he lied to her even in death.

Will's character goes through a fair amount of emotional back flips as the story goes on. He does manage to prove that even the undead can be both loyal and noble. Raising the child of his maker and his wife has to be tough but he seems to do it with great joy and care.

As for our newest "friend" from France.. Alderic is everything you would think undead royalty would be. He loves his fancy outfits and balls as well as his beautiful courtesans. I was happy to see he was as charming as he was powerful. His charm and humor make his character far more enjoyable to read and I look forward to seeing him in Oceana's future adventures.

Overall this, like Masquerade, was a must read. Rivka Spicer has the uncanny ability to create characters that stay with you long after the book is finished!

As a special gift for my readers I will be hosting a giveaway for an autographed copy of Masquerade and a beautiful necklace hand made by Rivka herself! To enter just post a comment here or on the Wolf Majick facebook page :)

For Keeps ~ Aaron Paul Lazar

For Keeps: a Sam Moore MysteryFor Keeps: a Sam Moore Mystery by Aaron Paul Lazar
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was lucky enough to receive this novel to review from the author a few weeks ago. I don't get to read very many books which don't included werewolves and vampires so this was an excellent change of pace.

For Keeps is the third book in the Sam Moore Mystery series. Even though this is the third novel it works perfectly as a standalone. I never once felt lost or confused about the characters, like can sometimes happen in a series. The main character, Sam, is instantly lovable. He reminded me a little of one of my favorite old tv shows about a mystery solving priest.

Now being a retired Doctor, Sam thinks he is called to look at a dead body for his expertise. Instead that one body opens up a slew of tragedies all centered around Sam himself. At this point it is important to mention the paranormal aspect of the novel. Sam is able to comunicate with his brother who passed away when they were children. Somehow with the help of a very special marble Sam is able to not just talk with his brother but travel into the past.

In previous mysteries this traveling has helped Sam solve a few crimes. This time around Sam hopes to take it to the next level. He wants to go back in time and stop a tragedy. Is it even possible? There is only one way to find out.

Beyond the mystery and time travel this story has a raw emotional quality that is to rare in todays novels. Sam and his family try to cope with a terrible tragedy and suffer through the stages of grief in such a way that you can truly feel their pain.

This novel was a total win any way you look at it. Once I was a bout four chapters in I found it hard putting it down. If you act fast it will be available for free download via Amazon this weekend :)

Savage is a paranormal romance with some language, violence, and sexual situations recommended for ages sixteen and up. It is the first in a family saga that covers three decades of the character's lives. The sequel is expected to be published in September 2012.

My Take:

Although it had a slow start I really enjoyed this one. Willow Rose has managed to craft a story that both keeps you interested and guessing all at the same time. It was a nice break from the usual, girl meets boy, boy is a werewolf kind or paranormal romance. In fact for a while you are thinking, huh were is the paranormal stuff? But when it shows up you will be pleasantly surprised. If your looking for something different this one would be a great one to pick up.

She is a huge fan of Anne Rice and Isabel Allende. When she is not writing or reading she enjoys to watch the dolphins play in the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Excerpt from Savage:
I removed my clothes and followed her into the cold water that sprang from the center of the earth in a spring somewhere further north and therefore had the same temperature all year around.                                                                            “Are there any animals in this water?” I asked as she carefully took me by the hand and led me in.                                                                                     “There might be manatees,” she said with a shrug.                           “What about alligators?" I asked and turned as I thought I heard something move behind me in the water. “Someone told me that there are alligators in all waterholes in Florida.”                                                                         She laughed. “There might be, but we rarely see them. Besides. It just makes it that more exciting, right?” She pulled my hand and drew me close to her. Our bodies felt warm against each other, her skin was soft, and touching it made me forget about animals in the water and the sounds of nature. I even forgot about my concerns as to hurting her and disappointing her parents. All I could think about was her and me, here right now in this water that was caressing our bodies. I kissed her again and held her naked body close to mine while allowing the passion to rise in me. Suddenly she pulled away from me. “Stop,” she whispered urgently. I looked at her and saw that the expression on her face had suddenly changed.                                                              “What’s wrong?” I asked sensing that my voice was shaking slightly. If it was out of fear or caused by the arousal I didn’t know.                                         “I thought I heard something.”                                                                 “Like what?” She shook her head while her expression cleared. She smiled. “It was probably nothing.”
